22 Jan Fatty Liver Disease: A Modern-Day Epidemic

by: Elena Klimenko, MD
Fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat within the cells of the liver that impairs its normal function. Fatty liver can develop due to excessive alcohol consumption or through metabolic dysfunction.
Metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease—known by its acronym MAFLD—is the most common liver disorder in the world. Previously, MAFLD was called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but changing the name to MAFLD has improved diagnostic parameters. In the United States alone, over 30% of the population has MAFLD, although they may not be aware of it.
Causes of MAFLD
Many factors can contribute to the development of MAFLD, including:
Diet
Lack of exercise
High cholesterol
Diabetes or insulin resistance
Obesity
MAFLD Consequences
Most people are not aware they have MAFLD without further testing because there are usually no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they are typically vague, like fatigue or dull, intermittent discomfort on the upper right side of the abdomen.
If left untreated, MAFLD can cause severe consequences for the liver, including liver failure or cancer.
MAFLD Management
A functional medicine practitioner personalizes their treatment strategy for each patient. The keystone of the functional medicine approach is to address modifiable lifestyle factors and promote healthier choices in areas like diet, exercise, sleep, or stress management.
Several nutritional supplements can also help to manage conditions that commonly occur along with MAFLD.
